Many women are prescribed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) for various medical conditions, including epilepsy. This guidance, based on a round table discussion held in London in October 2009 and sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis, has been written to help the non-specialist address the specific needs of female patients with epilepsy who present in the course of their normal work; the advice given is intended to help in identifying those patients who need referral to an appropriate specialist and is not meant as a definitive guide for the treatment of females with epilepsy. The guidance updates a publication from a similar meeting held in 2003 and includes new sections on adolescence and the menopause. This guidance will be of particular interest to GPs and may help them address the needs of females with epilepsy, which annual audit of their patients will identify.
