Febrile Neutropenia

The term 'febrile neutropenia' concerns the infections to which patients receiving chemotherapy are susceptible once anti-cancer drugs have suppressed their bone marrow.

This book contains three introductory chapters from the three conference co-chairmen, followed by five workshops on particular problems: oral antibiotic treatment, the choice of antibiotic for single-agent therapy, bacterial resistance and two specific types of infection, those that affect the central venous line used for drug delivery and pneumonia (a common cause of death). A crucial feature of the original conference was the high-quality debates that followed each presentation, and the book preserves their flavour at the end of each chapter. Key points emerging from the workshops are summarised in the text, and suggested guidelines are presented.

This book provides a crash course for those unaccustomed to the field and a valuable pointer to rational therapy for those who deal with the syndrome of febrile neutropenia on a day-to-day basis.
